tutorial: tricks and tips for making light textures V

as my dear PSP users always complain when I'm using the Lens Flare filter when making light texture tuts, I wrote a quick one without this filter (yay for caffeine that makes me hyper). Hope you're happy now ;P
I have no clue about PSP though, so don't blame me when I'm using other things that are PS only *g* (but I think this one is safe...)

also on a completely random note: yay! I think I've just repaired my washing machine and it spin-dries again, but booo! now I have no excuse for not wearing that ridiculous Hippie outfit to that FlowerPowerParty tonight....

tricks&tips for making light textures V
- Light textures with the gradient tool -

step 01: starting...

- a new document, size doesn't matter, I usually go for something big (1200x900 in this case)

step 02: grab your gradient tool

- I'm using the gradient tool in the ever popular way...
- choose the b/w standard Reflected Gradient, Mode: Difference, reverse it to w/b

- the Difference mode for the gradient tool allows some funky effects
- start dragging not so large little distances from one corner to the opposite one
- repeat that a couple of times (I speak of 10-15 and above *g*)
- try to keep them relatively closely together and in the middle of your canvas
- you can try some larger gradients but use them sparingly, and in the same direction

a closer look

and the result of this step

step 03: repetition

- on a new layer repeat step 02 on a new layer
- but in a different direction and with larger distances of the start and end point of your gradient tool
- try to get something similar to this... it's all about playing *g*

- set this layer on Blending Mode Screen or Lighten, depending how light your gradients are

step 04: color

- add a color fill layer in a color you like
- I've chosen a purple tone here (#95527D)
- simply set this layer on Color Burn mode, that way we also get more contrast and nifty colorization

- another color fill layer, this time in orange (#FF9B61)
- set it on Blending Mode Multiply and lower the opacity to around 20%
- we need this step to add some yellowish glow on the inside of our lights later :)

- still on the color thing...
- on a new layer paint a random mess with some dark colors, really anything goes...
- I've chosen dark green, dark blue/purple and dark brown for this (I've mentioned the colors should be *surprise* dark, right?)
- you can use a large soft round brush for this

- and it will look pretty when you put it on Layer Mode Color Dodge

- and lastly I added a b/w Radient Gradient on a new layer
- set it on Blending Mode Overlay to emphasize a spot and darken some parts

step 05: motion

- merge-copy-paste the whole thing into a new layer (crtl+shift+alt+e)
- use the Filter - Distort - Wave on this layer

- put it on Blending Mode Screen or Lighten depending on how light you want it to look

- Duplicate the last layer and put it on Blending Mode Linear Burn

tadaaaa! finished. (this one was made with the same technique)

step 06: additional cropping

- of course you can crop icon textures from it now :)

the easy feedback system ;)

uhm and also, what's with the sudden increasement of watchers of my little comm? I start feeling paranoid... which could also be the caffeine, but still... *looks around suspiciously*

This was infinitely helpful! I've been meaning to come up with a logo for my vidding and these were so beautiful that I followed right along in Photoshop. I've never done this so I hope I don't offend but I wanted to show you what I came up with. As you said, I took a little here, tweaked a little there and came up with this.

Gradients are something my brain can understand so it totally made sense the whole way through. Thank you so much!

Oh! And it might not have anything to do with the new watchers but I'm a reccer over at [info]darker_spike and you just happen to post a lot of great stuff on my day, so I'll rec your posts. Let me know if you want me to stop.

Oh, I like what you came up with :)
I'm glad I could inspire you *g*

no, don't stop. lol. it's nice being recced *g* I'm just a little bit shy and don't feel very comfy with too much attention... and as I don't advertise my stuff (except for the textures in [info]freshmakers lately) in any open comms, I'm always a little bit freaked out about how people find this place. heeee. I like to keep it on a personal note and it feels a bit weird when so many people are watching my ramblings ;)

I honestly love your tutorials. I adapted few of your tricks into my own textures and I love the outcome. Seriously. You introduce a tool and show how it works and I can't stop using it. You made me love Curves in my icons and later Wave in my Textures.
*loves you*
This one? Uber cool

I love all your tutorials; they are very helpful, especially since they are open-ended and promote experimentation. Perhaps the sudden increase in watchers has something to do with a person mentioning one of your tuts over at icon_tutorial the other day? I dont know, just a guess.

thank you :)

I'm glad you think so, as I'm always torn between, should I really post every numeric input of the filters I've used or should I just tell people what I was looking for and tried to achieve that with some experimentation. heeee.

a person mentioning one of your tuts over at icon_tutorial
really? hmmm, maybe that would explain it. I'm not a member of this comm, but I think it grew quite large and it's really busy overthere, huh?
it was just weird because there were like 50 new watchers in two days or so, and I don't promote my stuff anywhere... (except of the textures in freshmakers recently, but even that was quite some time ago...)

I'm a newbie watcher of your community, after someone linked one of your tuts on [info]icon_tutorial. I'm still trying to figure icons out. You've got some of the best tutorials I've seen, and I can't wait to try them. :)

ah, thanks, so maybe it's really a link from icon_tutorial why so many new people are showing up here :)

As to why there's a sudden increase in watchers of your comm, it could be that people love it so much that they're beginning to pimp it is all ^^

That is simply awesome. I use GIMP 2.2.10. After about 30 minutes of playing and trying to figure out translated setting I finally got theright effect. I was wondering if you would give me permission to write a turorial in GIMP language? I know a lot of people who could get some great use out of this.

Very very cool tutorial!

I just doublechecked and updated my icon resources (on which I have your personal journal listed) and discovered this comm. I'll check out your other tutorials and add this comm to my resource credit post!

Thanks for going to the trouble of making tutorials! I am always too lazy... //).

Confused...

I think this is a waaaay awsome tut., but i tried it out, and im doing it completely wrong! I use PS 7, but what exactly does 'b/w','w/b', and *g* stand for? Also, everytime i drag, it turnes into a very strange, pink pipe thing, and it turns into the opposite direction i draged it in!! I have no idea how you got your result on the first step!! Can somebody please help me???

[info]alilacia

August 24 2006, 23:33:50 UTC 5 years ago

Re: Confused...

I'm going to guess at b/w = black/white, w/b = white/black and g = grey.
